Description:

  • Title: Renaissance Old Master Altarpiece Adoration of the Magi Oil Painting Christ Child Virgin Mary Nobleman Wise Men Ermine Collar Attendants Tabernacle Frame Gothic Medieval Subject
  • Description: Absolutely stunning Renaissance Old Master altarpiece featuring the Christ as a child and the Virgin Mary receiving offerings from the Three Wise Men; however, this piece is likely commissioned by a Renaissance Nobleman, who has had himself portrayed as the kneeling man to show his lineage to Christ, and therefore justify his authority and legitimize his power through divine-right. The painting has a gilded under-layer that shines through the accents of each Wise Man, but is especially prevalent on the kneeling subject, lending more credence to this individual being the cameo of the commissioning aristocrat. The frame is not original to the altarpiece, but is exceptionally well-done and adds a tremendous depth to the piece, as well as providing the tabernacle setting typically associated with the birth of Christ. This piece is part of an estate collection of five paintings, each appearing in this auction. Though they differ in subject matter, age, and artist, they are all together a fantastic collection.
