  • Description: Exhibited Andy Warhol Signed Mao Trial Proof Marian Goodman Alan Eaker and Museum Provenance Styria Studio Stamp 1972. Scarce and important 1972 Andy Warhol 36 x 36 inch silkscreen print of Chinese Communist Party Chairman Mao Tse Tung signed by Andy Warhol in blue ink script and inscribed T.P. for Trial Proof, aside from the numbered edition and A.P. artists proofs, stamped copyright Andy Warhol 1972 Printed at Styria Studio Inc, all verso, unmatted and unframed. Provenance: According to Alan Eaker, former Director of Graphic Studio at USF with whom we spoke directly about this artwork this print was sold by the Marian Goodman Multiples gallery in New York to a gallery in Atlanta and it was subsequently sold to Tampa Bay resident Maril B. Jacobs. In 1982 with Alan Eaker as an art agent, this work together with another Mao in a different color combination, an Edward Ruscha, a Jasper Johns and a Roy Lichtenstein was part of an art transaction resulting in Tom Valenti, also of the Tampa Bay area, then purchasing the two Maos. See a photocopy of the Eaker transaction with Valenti family handwritten annotations that accompanies the lot. In 1989-1990 Valenti loaned this artwork to the Center of the Arts Vero Beach, FL, the Mississippi Museum of Arts, Jackson, MS, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, TN and the Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts, Roanoke, VA when it was then returned to the Tampa Museum of Art for the Valenti family, now out of state, and we arranged to have the work driven back to the Tampa Bay area this June, 2024. Alan Eaker confirmed this is definitely authentic, being both hand signed by Warhol and a Styria printing for Marian Goodman, who was collaborating on the publishing of this edition with Castelli Graphics. According to the Valenti family they spoke with Sofia Kitching, Marian Goodman gallery historian, and Ms. Kitching said this print was published by Multiples, Inc. and Castelli Graphics however early Multiples, Inc. records are not well organized. Warhol screenprint trial proofs are very rare and sometimes unpublished. While no Trial Proofs are in the raisonne for Mao, a stamped Mao TP was sold for USD 80,621 at Dorotheum in Vienna December 1, 2022 which they called in the Austian cataloging a T.P. test print vs. T.P. trial proof and a print variation from this edition was sold by Farsettiarte in Europe in 2009 for USD 113,908 that was called unique. A number of P.P. printers proofs also exist for this edition. Other Warhol silkscreen on paper Trial Proof examples include a circa 1966 unique unpublished trial proof on paper of Jackie O was sold for $684,500 by Christies on November 16, 2017, all three above sale citations as reported by artnet.
